This sounds so lovely! I'm looking forward to your spring bulb display. I had the same experience with my gardening books, they're missing some details...
Perhaps you want to know about my experience with bulbs during summer: I'm in a slightly warmer zone, a website tells me 8B. My narcissus have been in a plastic pot in dappled shade on my hot full sun balcony all summer and a few weeks ago I repotted them and they were looking very healthy with lots of roots. Furthermore, I kept my bulbs and terracotta pots all unprotected on the balcony last winter and they did fine, of course it's slightly warmer here but it does freeze every now and then. I'm excited to know how yours will do!
OK, yes! Thank you! This is exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for. :) I'm in 7b but I swear it's more like a zone 8--maybe because I'm on a rooftop--so it's good to know that the terracotta/bulbs did ok outside unprotected. And I'm definitely going to do what you did with the spent bulbs--seems like the way to go :)
Happy to share!! Yes I can imagine - on my third floor balcony without a roof I feel like there’s a microclimate too and a rooftop must be even warmer. Also about reusing bulbs: sadly I threw my tulips from last year away because they had some sort of disease, I wasn’t exactly sure what (it didn’t look like blight, in hindsight I think it might’ve been spider mites). I think I will try to reuse my tulips next year and just see how it goes, even though many (or all??) people say they won’t do so well a second time in pots. I just want to try it out haha.
This is so inspirational! I spent last month hacking away at my front yard trying to plant bulbs in our awful clay soil, but then last weekend my neighbor (generously) gave me three bags of bulbs and I was thinking about doing some pots with them but never have before either! I love your color combos - those tulips are amazing. It is hard to be hopeful right now, hang in there.
Oh, I can't wait to see how the bulbs do in pots! Mine did ok in the ground in Portland weirdly enough, but you'd think all that rain wouldn't be good for them and that planting them in pots that you can move under cover would probably work better anyway?
And, thank you! Hope you're doing well, too. I think I might need to take a political podcast break because none of this news has been hopeful :[

Can’t wait to the the bulbs bloom…maybe Drew can put out food for the squirrels so they don’t bother the bulbs!
Thanks, Anthe! And don't give Drew any ideas! ha ha, I could definitely see him feeding the squirrels, and it wouldn't be the first time. :)
